I rarely admit this but when I first heard a little while back that they would be coming out with a sequel to the Godfather game I got goose bumps. My initial reaction to the first video game based on the Godfather was negative to be honest. Games made from films generally suck, let’s face it. You guys have to remember I grew up in the time when games based on films like Total Recall and E.T were so bad that they ruined a lot of avid gamers’ confidence in the whole concept of video games based on hit films. Oddly enough, the game (and movie) that changed this perception of mine was the 007-based Goldeneye for the Nintendo 64. For some reason here was a movie that plainly sucked but the game based on it was superb. I don’t care who you are, if you are not old enough to remember Goldeneye on Nintendo 64, you probably shouldn’t be reading this article. But I digress… |

The .357 Magnum Revolver
The inclusion of the .357 Magnum Revolver as an unlockable weapon in CALL OF DUTY: WORLD AT WAR is a strange one in my opinion. Although yes, the .357 Magnum Revolver was available in the United States at the time of the Second World War, it was rarely carried into battle as it was a non-standard issue sidearm (that was the job of the Colt M1911 and its variants) and soldiers were rarely eager to purchase their own sidearm when they had received such extensive training on their far more modern Colt M1911 pistols. In fact for most soldiers it wasn’t even an option to purchase their own weapons so it was Colt M1911 or nothing. |

The Colt M1911A1
Not since the iconic Colt Peacemaker of the late 19th century has a handgun design become as recognizable and as ubiquitous (on both sides of the law) as the Colt 1911 family of semi-automatic pistols. In fact, I would go so far as to say that the Colt 1911 is to semi-automatic, magazine-fed pistols as its great grandfather, the Colt Peacemaker is to single-action revolvers. |

Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR)
For part II of our special on the weapons of CALL OF DUTY: WORLD AT WAR as compared to the real guns on which they are based I chose the legendary Browning Automatic Rifle (or BAR as it is often referred to including within the game itself). This light machine gun was invented by a John Moses Browning whom many consider to be the Thomas Edison of gun designers. In fact, just to give you an idea of how prolific his designs were (and are still today), I will let you know that no fewer than four guns that appear in CALL OF DUTY: WORLD AT WAR were all originally designed by this one guy. In case you are wondering, they are: -the Colt M1911 .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol -the Browning M1919 belt-fed heavy machine gun -the Browning .50 caliber heavy machine gun (found on tanks etc) -and of course the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) |
